Understanding The Trail and Ultra Runners Foot (In Association with Sidas UK)

Presented in conjunction with Sidas UK, Understanding the Trail and Ultra runners foot is an in depth and detailed look at participants of one of the fastest growing sports in the UK . Course attendees will cover relevant anatomy, assessment and treatment of common trail and ultra running issues. We will discuss concepts in strength and conditioning for mountain athletes and the relevant biomechanics. Students will learn how to advise runners on choosing the correct footwear for the task at hand as well as footcare techniques and an understanding of how other equipment choices might affect performance. Students will learn the process of fitting and manufacturing custom insoles using Sidas Custom Fit technology and cases in which that may be appropriate for a runner. The event will conclude with the opportunity to test out Sidas custom and stock insole products on a short trail run around the beautiful Ashridge estate. Take your understanding of trail and ultra runners to the next level.

Course content to include

  • Anatomy of the foot with regard to off-road running.
  • Assessment of the runner’s feet.
  • Biomechanical assessment of runners.
  • Running red flags.
  • Concepts in running-specific strength and conditioning and adaptation.
  • Running strategies for different surfaces and terrains.
  • Trail running shoes – discussion of market trends and the effect of shoe geometry and construction upon run performance.
  • Sock choice.
  • Foot and nail care.
  • Insoles (off the shelf, custom-made, manufacture of custom insoles, equipment and process) – when they may be appropriate, how they are made, aims, and effects.
  • Sidas insole test run (around 5k gentle trail run).
  • Dealing with common running foot problems.
